Is my tube T8 or T5?
T8 tubes are 26mm across with a two-pin G13 cap; T5 tubes are 16mm with the smaller G5 cap, and the two do not interchange. Length matters as much as diameter — 2ft, 4ft and 5ft are the common T8 sizes here, while T5 lengths run with the wattage, from 14W and 21W up to 35W standard, and 24W and 54W in high output. Measure the existing tube before ordering.
Should I re-lamp or replace the whole fitting?
Re-lamping is quicker: an LED tube such as the Osram SubstiTUBE or a Philips LED tube goes into an existing G13 holder. Whether the control gear needs changing depends on the fitting, so check rather than assume. Replacing the fixture with an LED batten gives one sealed unit with the driver built in and nothing to re-lamp later.
What is a damp proof fitting for?
Damp proof battens are gasketed against dust and water — car parks, plant rooms and covered outdoor runs, where an open batten simply fills with dust. The Ledvance DP VAL is marked IP65, meaning dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets.
