Conduit is protective tubing that carries and shields cable through walls, ceilings, floors and exposed areas. PVC conduit is light, non-corroding and easy to bend with a spring; steel conduit is used where mechanical protection matters more. Both are built up from a family of accessories — couplers, bends, inspection elbows, adaptable boxes and saddles — so a run can turn corners and terminate cleanly at a back box. Sizes are stated by outside diameter, typically 20mm and 25mm, and a conduit should not be filled so tightly that cables cannot be drawn or replaced later.
Installing conduit that will carry fixed mains wiring is work for a licensed electrician.
