Which base fits my fitting?
E27 is the large Edison screw used by most ceiling fittings, pendants and stick-shaped bulbs. E14 is the small screw found in chandeliers, wall brackets and bedside lamps, and is what candle and filament shapes use. The two are not interchangeable, so take the old lamp out and check the thread before ordering — and note that a bayonet (B22) holder will not accept either.
How many lumens do I need?
Buy on lumens, not watts: watts measure what the bulb consumes, lumens measure the light it gives. An 8–10W LED produces roughly 800–1055 lumens, the old 60–75W incandescent level, which suits a bedroom, bathroom or hallway; 11–13W is the sensible choice for a majlis or living room. High-output E27 lamps such as the Philips TrueForce sit well above that — they are made to replace HID highbay lamps, not to go in a table lamp.
Warm white or cool daylight?
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. 2700K–3000K is warm white, the yellow-toned light most people prefer in bedrooms and living rooms. 6500K is cool daylight, crisp and blue-toned, and remains the popular choice for UAE kitchens, bathrooms and offices. Mixing the two in one room always shows, so order a matched set. Check dimmability as well — clear filament and candle lamps are often non-dimmable, and putting one on a dimmer circuit causes flicker and shortens its life.
