What does 10AX or 20AX mean on a switch?
The number is the current the switch can carry; the AX suffix marks it as intended for lighting loads, which draw a brief inrush above their running current. 10AX covers ordinary room lighting; 16A and 20AX plate switches suit heavier loads. Separately, 20A and 45A double-pole switches with neon are the ones fitted at water heater, AC and cooker points.
Socket, fused outlet or cooker control unit?
A 13A switched socket takes a plug and is the default outlet, with USB-charging and unswitched versions on the same plate. A fused connection unit feeds a fixed appliance — an extractor fan, a towel rail — through its own fuse instead of a plug. A cooker control unit combines a 45A double-pole switch with a 13A socket on one plate for a kitchen appliance point.
Will a new plate fit my existing back box?
Most replacements swap like-for-like onto the wall box already there, so match the gang count and plate size before ordering. Grid and Euro frontplates let you build your own combination of modules behind one plate; blank plates close off a box no longer in use. Hotel key-card and do-not-disturb switches use the same plate family.
