Low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) cable uses a sheath compound that gives off little smoke and no halogen gas when it burns, which keeps escape routes clearer and reduces the corrosive fumes that damage equipment. Fire-resistant cable is a related but separate property: the construction is designed to keep a circuit working for a defined period during a fire, which is why it is associated with alarm and emergency lighting circuits. A cable can be one, the other, or both, so the specification for a project should be read carefully rather than assumed from the name.
