Why does the neutral get switched too?
An ordinary light switch interrupts the live conductor only. On a fixed appliance that gets serviced — a water heater element, a cooker — breaking both poles isolates the appliance from the supply rather than leaving a connected neutral behind it. That is the whole point of the second pole.
20A or 45A?
Follow the circuit the appliance sits on. A domestic water heater is typically controlled by a 20A DP switch; a cooker or range draws far more and takes a 45A unit. What is a cooker control unit?
The MK 45A units combine the double pole switch with a 13A switched socket on one plate, so the cooker point also gives you a worktop socket. Neon and non-neon versions are both stocked — the neon simply shows at a glance that the appliance is switched on.
These are fixed-wiring accessories on dedicated circuits, not plug-in items. Have a licensed electrician confirm the rating against the existing circuit and fit the switch.
