How many sockets, and how long?
Choose the length first. Measure from the wall socket to where the equipment actually sits and allow slack, because a lead pulled tight strains the plug. Then the socket count: 3-way suits a desk or a TV point, 5-way a workbench or an office pod. More sockets does not mean more power — every outlet shares one cable and one plug, so a 13A lead is 13A in total however much is plugged into it.
Is it safe to use a lead while it is coiled?
No, and this matters more than people expect. Cable carrying current gives off heat, and coiled cable cannot shed it — the turns warm each other until the insulation softens. Run a lead out to its full length before putting any real load on it, and never leave a cable reel wound on the drum while running a heater, compressor or power tool.
Indoor, outdoor or workshop?
Standard leads are for dry indoor rooms. Balconies, gardens and wash areas need splash-protected sockets, and should be unplugged and brought in afterwards. If you are permanently extending to reach the same point, the circuit needs another socket outlet — work for a licensed electrician, not a longer lead.
