How much airflow does the room actually need?
A propeller fan moves a large volume of air against very little resistance, which suits an open room with a short path outside. Roughly: 6″ (15AAQ1) for a small bathroom or store; 8″ (20ALA, 20AUA) for a modest domestic kitchen; 10″ (25ALA, 25AUA) for a busy kitchen or small workshop; 12″ (30ALA, 30AUA) where heat, fumes or grease build faster than a smaller fan can clear them. Undersizing shows as condensation on walls and smells that never quite go.
AUA or ALA — is the shutter worth the difference?
AUA models carry a louvre on the outer face that lifts on air pressure and drops shut the moment the fan stops, so an idle fan is not an open hole in the blockwork. It also stops the blade windmilling backwards on an exposed wall. ALA models leave the aperture clear — fine where the fan runs continuously or discharges into a covered shaft.
Replacing an older wall fan?
The fan sits in a sleeve cored through the wall, so sleeve diameter is the real constraint, not the fan body. Measure that internal diameter before choosing — going from 8″ to 10″ means enlarging the core, which is builder's work. The electrical connection, and any change to the circuit feeding it, must be made by a licensed electrician.
