Shop soft starters for pump sets, compressors, chillers and fans across the UAE — ABB PSTX units rated 142A, 250A and 300A for 208–600V AC supplies, sized for medium and large three-phase motors.
Why not start the motor direct-on-line?
A motor switched straight across the line draws roughly six to eight times its full-load current for the first few seconds, plus a mechanical shock. On a large pump that means voltage dip on the supply, hammering in the pipework and wear on couplings and belts. A soft starter ramps the voltage so current and torque build gradually, then hands to a bypass at full speed. It also gives a controlled stop, which matters where an abrupt stop causes water hammer.
How do I size one?
Size on the motor's full-load current and duty, not the kilowatt figure alone. Rated current must sit above motor FLC with margin for how it starts — long ramps, high-inertia loads and frequent starts all push you up a size. Check the supply sits inside the 208–600V band, and remember a starter is not short-circuit protection: isolation and a breaker or fuses still belong upstream in the panel.
Soft starter or variable speed drive?
A soft starter controls starting and stopping only — once running, the motor turns at full speed. A VFD regulates speed continuously and suits duties where flow or airflow must vary. Where the problem is inrush and mechanical stress at start-up, the soft starter is simpler and cheaper.
Sizing, installation, parameter setting and commissioning are work for a qualified electrical engineer or licensed electrician — these are three-phase devices operating at up to 600V. Send us the motor nameplate and we will check the rating before you order.
