Are you replacing a lamp or the whole fitting?
A lamp screws or pins into a fitting you already have: LED and CFL bulbs, fluorescent and LED tubes, PL lamps, halogen capsules and metal halide burners. A luminaire is the complete unit wired to the circuit — 60x60 and 120x30 recessed panels, round downlights for gypsum ceilings, battens and damp-proof fittings for service areas, highbays and floodlights. If the housing is sound, a lamp swap is the cheaper route.
Which cap or base does my lamp use?
The cap is the end that connects, and it must match exactly. Screw caps are E27 for standard bulbs, E14 for candles. Pin bases cover G13 for T8 and T5 tubes, GU10 for mains spots, G9 and GY6.35 for halogen capsules, and G24 or 2G11 for PL and CFL lamps. Read the old lamp or the fitting label rather than judging by shape.
Cool daylight or warm white?
Colour temperature, in kelvin, sets the character of the light. 6500K cool daylight suits kitchens, bathrooms and offices; 4000K neutral white suits corridors and retail; 3000K warm white belongs in bedrooms and majlis. Keep one temperature throughout a room; mixing them is the most visible mistake in a relamp.
Screw-in and pin lamps you can change yourself, but anything wired into a ceiling or a pole is a licensed electrician's job. Tell us the ceiling type and the area to be lit and we will build a schedule.
